The beauty of geometry and craftsmanship in architectural glass

The beauty of geometry and craftsmanship in architectural glass

At the intersection of today’s architectural art and technological innovation, projects such as The Henderson at No. 2 Murray Road in Central, Hong Kong, were designed by the international masterclass Zaha Hadid Architects. Its architectural surface is inlaid with complex curved glass. It has become the benchmark for future architectural aesthetics.

揽望 | GLASVUE joins together in paying tribute to The Henderson’s at No. 2 Murray Road project, and the in-depth analysis of the technical challenges and artistic charm behind such projects. Behind every piece of curved glass, there is an architectural design hidden within. The designer has a deep understanding of materials, structure, and aesthetics.

Glass technology that challenges imagination

When it comes to architectural glass, many people may think of the flat or simple curved designs they see every day. However, the current architectural glass technology is much more innovative than that.

Just like in The Henderson project in Hong Kong, there are more than 4080 giant glass units, more than 60% of which are complex curved surfaces, and each one is a unique work of art.

Not only are these glasses huge in size, reaching an average of 2 meters wide and 5 meters high, but each piece needs to accurately match its unique hyperboloid design, inspired by the complex shape of Hong Kong’s city flower, the Bauhinia. This is not only a subversion of traditional flat glass, but also a challenge to the limits of the glass processing and manufacturing industry.

Customization to precision/technology empowers art

Faced with such complex curved surface requirements, it is necessary to abandon the conventional path of mass production and turn to one-to-one customized design and manufacturing.

Each piece of glass is like a finely carved work of art. It has been accurately matched with the 3D scan and computer model to ensure that every arc is exactly the same as the design blueprint.  This process is like the meticulous craftsmanship of a Michelin chef, which not only demonstrates technical proficiency, but also embodies the ultimate pursuit of aesthetics.

The miracle of hyperbolic craftsmanship

Compared with common single-sided glass, the production process of double-curved glass is much more difficult. It requires precise curvature changes in two directions, just like the subtle curves of nature, which challenges the limits of processing technology.

Each piece of double-curved glass in The Henderson project not only perfectly demonstrates the design intention, but also achieves seamless splicing. Its smooth transition is amazing. This is a revolution in traditional glass processing technology.

Green Technology/Leading a Sustainable Future

In addition to breakthroughs in aesthetics and technology, The Henderson’s curtain wall system is also equipped with advanced SRV induction solar ventilation equipment, which uses solar energy to reduce building energy consumption. It successfully obtained LEED White Gold and WELL White Gold certification, demonstrating green architecture.

Future trends

This is not only an expression of environmental responsibility, but also a strong proof of equal emphasis on technological innovation and sustainable development.
